Chapter 11
River woke to a medic flashing a light in her eyes
Kai was kneeling next to her.
His eyes were full of fear and worry.
River’s brain felt a little spongy and thoughts came slowly and thickly.
Flickering lights behind her triggered a memory.
Fire.
Heat. She had to go, had to get up and…
And what?
“Try not to sit up. You got pretty beat up in there. We need to get you to a doctor soon.” The square jawed young man stammered, looking down at her arm. His crisp blue uniform was smudged with soot and ash.
Kai’s eyes flicked down as well, then back to River’s.
“T-that’s impossible. You had burns here just a second ago….”
“Must have been soot,” Malachi shrugged his shoulders noncommittally.
“Yeah. Right. I’ve been serving this pack for years. I’ve never seen a wolf heal that fast,” he muttered looking up at Kai. He froze. “Oh…oh my gosh. I am so sorry, Your Highness. I didn’t recognize you at first.”
“Don’t worry. And the healing is perfectly supernatural. She’s special.” Malachi winked conspiratorially.
What was he talking about?
River couldn’t get her thoughts to clear.
“I’ve heard of royal wolves having extraordinary powers but for that to be true, she would have to be to be your-”
River sat up and cleared her throat pointedly. It still felt raw and scratchy.

She hated when people talked like she wasn’t there.
“So, I’m fine? Where’s Klara? Grandma?” Her fears clawed back to the forefront of her mind. She remembered getting them both out. Details were still blurry.
And that didn’t mean they were OK.
“They’re fine. You got them out in time.” Kai reassured her. “They might not heal as fast as you, but all wolves are resilient.”
“But-”
“Relax. Riv. I promise I will have them looked at by my best doctor. But we needed to get them to safety first.”
River’s nostrils flared with irritation and worry.
Then anger.
Someone attacked her family.
Memories flitted through her stress addled mind. Somewhere along the
she remembered a scent. One that didn’t belong in their home…
way
She couldn’t quite place it. Either her heightened wolf senses were too new, or the fire must have erased traces of the arsonist.
Kai nodded as if he understood her inner battle, but his eyes begged her to go along with him for now. River scowled, then nodded once back.
Paul, Malachi’s driver, offered her a sip of water.
She ch u gged the whole bottle.
Kai pulled the medic aside and muttered, “We need to get them away before the authorities arrive or get wind of our presence there to avoid a fiasco. Damage control protocols?”
“Yes, Your Highness. Of course.” The medic hustled off to relay orders to his partners. They were helping Grandma and Klara up into wheelchairs near the back of a spa cious black van. River vaguely recognized the

abandoned parking lot as the old abandoned grocery store on the edge of
town.
Kai waved to Paul, his driver. “Is he almost here?””
“Yes, your highness.”
“Call him out. We need to get to the jet”
Paul nodded and stepped off, raising his cell phone to his ear.
“Kai, what is going on?” River finally made it to her feet, sore muscles and moving to follow her family into the van.

The calm, collected prince gently grabbed her arm. “Paul called in the hotline. Every pack has its own first response for these types of situations, but the local fire and police will be along soon, too. The town will be all abuzz. Our people will handle them and avoid too many questions.”
“But the house, our home…
“I know. I’m sorry. I will do everything in my power to figure out what happened, and I will personally replace everything that was lost. But we aren’t safe out here in the open.”
“So what, we just run away?”
“You do what you have to do. And you follow my orders to the word from here out,” a hard, cold voice interrupted.
River turned abruptly, and possibly with a foul remark on her lips to see another male appear out of the shadows. He was Malachi’s polar opposite.
Not to say he wasn’t incredibly good looking.
But his features were fair and pale where Kai’s were tan, and his hair was raven black where Kai’s was honey brown. Piercing blue eyes only matched the prince’s in their intensity, but they were calculating and much colder than Malachi’s.
“In the van. Now. Both of you.” One of the medics tossed him a set of keys, presumably for the van.

“Who the hell-?”:
“Listen to him, River.” Kai shook hands with the other male briefly and
they both waved to the response team as they piled into another vehicle and sped off.
Paul and the blue-eyed jerk climbed into the front seats.
River let Malachi guide her into the side door of the van and quickly belted in. So many questions raced through her mind. Then she saw Klara and Grandma and her heart overwhelmed her thoughts.
They really were alright, if a bit worse for wear.
“Heya, Rapid. How are you?” Klara squeezed her shoulder firmly. Grandma was sound asleep, looking completely at ease in spite of her singed nightgown and soot covered face.
River huffed something between a laugh and a s ob. “I’m…just glad you’re
both here.”
Don’t cry right now, Riv. Keep it together!
Klara’s eyes looked a little misty and she started to speak when the dark haired male cut them off.
“Everyone listen up. We will be to the airstrip in ten minutes. You will all listen carefully when I tell you to go, and how. I won’t take a chance with the prince’s life if there is a threat nearby. Are we clear?”
“The only thing I am clear about is that this guy’s got to be joking,” Klara
scoffed.
River suppressed a snort at her aunt’s comment. She could almost feel the dark haired male seethe as they drove down the dark road.
“Just doing my job.”
“Oliver is a little…overbearing when it comes to his job,” Kai muttered, rolling his eyes.
“And you are more than a little pain in my as s,” Oliver snapped back at

him. “If you wouldn’t go gallivanting off every checking in or telling me where you are-”
five minutes without
“Then I would never have a moment’s peace!” Kai grumbled. “Or meet pretty girls in lakes.”
River smirked and c oc ked an eyebrow at the childish exchange.
“You should not speak to His Highness like that,” Paul interjected, tossing a reprimanding glare at Oliver in the passenger seat next to him.
River tended to agree.
Who the hell did this guy think he was?
“It’s the only way he ever understands!” Oliver protested. “If he’d act like a prince, I’d talk to him like one,” he finished under his breath.
“Perks of being my best friend and personal bodyguard since we were both in diapers,” Kai winked at River.
“And Captain of the Guard,” Oliver added proudly.
“Oof. Next he’ll start bragging about how he beat me in every subject, sport, and ceremonial award!” Malachi shook his head with a smile.
“I don’t brag,” Oliver contested sternly.
“Or ever take the stick out of your a ss, apparently,” River blurted out.
“River!” Klara half laughed, half scolded.
There was a tense pause in the van.
Then Kai burst out laughing, followed by Klara. River couldn’t help but join in and even Paul’s shoulders shook with suppressed mirth. Oliver may have smirked for a split second before he scowled and shook his head.
On Oliver’s orders, Paul circled the perimeter, waiting for a signal from the crew. River caught sight of several coded flashes of light from various points in the woods and along the fence line.
They ground to a halt at the entrance and Oliver unlocked the chain,

drawing the gate back for them to enter.
A sleek, stunning, gleaming white jet sat at the far end of the tarmac.
Wow. Princes travel in style.
River had never seen such a luxurious looking aircraft in her life.
The van pulled alongside the aircraft and Paul and Oliver got out, waving to two uniformed males standing at the base of the door that opened into stairs. One nodded and touched his ear piece and the plane’s engines
roared to life.
Soon River found herself seated in a plush, leather recliner in the lounge of the plane. Her Aunt and Grandma were shown to private quarters where Lucy was laid down to sleep and Klara was able to shower.
River desperately wanted to wash the ash and smoke off of her body, but she had too many questions.
And Oliver and Kai would answer them. Or else.
Unfortunately, she had to put those thoughts on pause as the plane readied to take off and she was instructed by the flight attendant to buckle. up. Kai and Oliver were nowhere to be found as the vessel gained speed.
River gulped. She had never flown before.
Not that she was scared or anything.
But she may have wished Klara or Kai were in the seat next to her to hold. her hand as the plane rocketed down the strip and lifted off with a stomach dropping pressure.
Soon River’s heart stopped pounding and she realized that she was relatively OK with the idea of soaring thousands of feet up through the air.
With no one around to instruct her, she unclipped her belt and wandered. forward toward where she had last seen Kai.
The door to a small office was pushed ajar and she could just make out a sliver of Oliver sitting in a chair across a desk from the prince. He

unbuckled his own belt and leaned out of view.
“We should head straight back as soon as we deposit her kin.”
“I am uprooting her enough as it is, Ollie. Couldn’t we wait a day or two, just to get her used to the idea? So she knows they’re safe?”
“We need to get back. You know why,” Oliver was adamant. Kai sounded like he wanted to argue but Oliver cut him off, “And do not start in again. about bringing them with us. It’s against the laws. We must leave them.”
“Whoa, what do you mean leave? Deposit my kin? Klara and Grandma aren’t safe. They’re coming with us!” River shoved into the room.
“Not to the palace, they’re not,” Oliver scoffed, completely unphased by her outburst and her presence.
“I am not leaving my family somewhere!”
“They will be perfectly safe. Probably more so away from you,” Oliver stood and stepped towards her, forcing her back out the door and into the lounge.
River back-stepped awkwardly, feeling her temper flash hot.
Oliver’s head tipped to one side quizzically. Then his eyes narrowed, a challenge.
She really wanted to hit him. Hard.
And the smug b astard wanted her to, as well. His cold gaze sent a chill of apprehension and warning through her. She was no match for Oliver.
“Rapid, it’s OK. We can’t come with you,” Klara stood in the rear doorway of the lounge, her hair still damp.
-“Then I don’t want to go, either.”
“Fine by me. I have enough trouble just handling Malachi,” Oliver sniffed rudely, his broad shoulders and wide stance filling the hallway, looming
over River.

Chapter 11
“Oliver…” Kai’s growl cut him off as he shoved around the other male’s impressive width. “River, things back home are complicated. There are laws that prohibit outsiders from coming into the castle’s domain, and procedures for seeking an audience with the King. I wish we could bring them, but unless your Aunt or Grandma are members of the court-
“I know the old ways. Trained in my youth,” Grandma Lucy’s voice was soft but easily heard over the sound of the engine. Everyone turned as she nudged Klara aside. She was wrapped in a blanket, her hair still mussed and stained with soot.
River smiled in spite of herself.
Somehow Grandma looked as regal as she ever had. River rushed to hug her and Klara both. Seeing them well and together made her feel stronger. “I knew your father, Malachi. Micah and I were old friends. I have been to -the castle. I would like to accompany River, if I may.”
Kai smiled, nodding slightly at the news, but a flinch of sadness filled the expression.
Oliver glanced at his prince, then glared skeptically at the old woman. He crossed his arms and sniffed. “Prove it.
“Moon marked, we are born and we swear, by Luna’s claw, tooth, blood, and every breath of air. Life for life and oath of death, wolf-mother’s secrets will be kept,” Grandma posed with her hands folded as she said it.
Oliver and Kai both stared, jaws slightly open in shock.
“You…you were one of the Queen’s handmaidens!” Kai whispered in awe.
