River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 12

Chapter 12
The plane touched down a few hours later as the sun was just peeking over
the h orizon.
River groaned awake in her seat, having dozed off sometime very soon after the incredible hot shower she took in the plane’s sp acious bathroom.
And that was after Grandma Lucy put the royal pups in their place about her joining them at the castle. She was unbelievably relieved that her grandmother would be there with her.
Too bad Aunt Klara couldn’t.
No amount of arguing on River’s part made a difference. And Grandma Lucy was just as adamant as Oliver on the matter.
The royal family’s protection and traditions were final and strict.
River seriously wondered about going there and being subject to their rule.
“Good morning, River,” Kai’s voice was soft from the chair next to hers. That honey-silk of his voice sent little shivers through her.
She could get used to being woken up by that voice.
Other parts of her stirred at his presence, as well.
Hunger. But actual, real hunger, too.
Her stomach growled viciously.
“Breakfast,” River heard herself grumble.
Well. That was dignified.
Kai’s expression curled up with one eyebrow and a half smile. She wondered if it was him reading her thoughts again.
Before she could snarl and hiss, he had a steaming cup of coffee in front
of her and all was well with the universe. Princes. So ridiculous.

Chapter 12
Awesome and ridiculous.
Klara and Grandma joined them both and Oliver for a quick meal of fresh fruit and breads, none of them saying much in the early hours of the day. after little sleep and the ordeal of the fire.
Besides, Oliver was a bit of a wet rag in his official duties.
But Kai seemed to respect and like the male.
“In ten minutes, we will disembark. I will escort Klara to the town proper. After securing accommodations for her, I will contact the local Alpha and convey Prince Malachi’s intentions and request for her safety.” Oliver spoke as if he was reading off of a list.
“Don’t forget to oil along the way,” River muttered.
Kai snickered.

Oliver’s eyes flashed for a split second. Maybe there was more to him than met the eye…
“I have a better idea. Why don’t we all drive into town. It’ll go much quicker if I just go. Less hubbub. An impromptu visit will avoid any big quicker if I just go. Less h fanfare,” Kai asserted casually, ignoring Oliver’s frown of disapproval.
“Fanfare? Are we talking red carpets and werewolf p apa ra zzi?” River quipped.
“It’s not always like that. I just don’t want to draw undue attention,” Kai stated, shrugging. There was something else, though. He was up to something.
“I advise against-”
“Ollie, can we just call it an order and get to it?” Malachi used a tone River had only heard once during the ascension. Pure authority rang in hist words, only for a second, but the effect was immediate.
Even Klara and Grandma bowed their heads slightly.
River wondered, not for the first time why it didn’t affect her.

Chapter 12
Paul was waiting outside with a SUV that he had somehow acquired since. their landing. The drive was beautiful, down a mountain road through dense forest.
Klara started smiling almost as soon as they turned onto the major road. and caught a glimpse of a town in the valley below.
“What are the odds?” She coc ked an eyebrow at Malachi.
“I have no clue what you are talking about,” he said, hiding a smile.
“Just good intelligence,” Oliver added. Was he almost smiling too?
River looked back and forth a few times before finally clearing her throat pointedly. “Anyone want to tell me what the big secret is?”
“Before your mom moved away and eventually met your father she lived with her family, right next door to her best friend. Me. In a little mountain town.” Klara raised her eyebrows and bobbed her head at River, leading
her on.
Immediately, River recalled every story Klara had told her about her mother and their childhood together.
“This is your hometown? Your original pack?”
“One and the same. I haven’t been home in years.”
“I am sure Alpha Hendricks will be happy to see you, and happy to provide you with a place to stay.”
“I couldn’t ask for a safer place to hide out,” Klara commented, probably as much to reassure River as anything.
The town was quaint and cute with a classic once-mining-town Main Street and a lot of old brick buildings. Paul let Kai and Oliver out at the most official looking building — clearly a town hall of some sort — and they promised to meet back with the rest of them soon.
River offered to join, but no surprise — Oliver shut it down:
Royal business.

Chapter 12
Hmph.
Paul drove them directly to a cottage along the river. After unloading a trunk full of clothing and provisions for Klara and giving her the keys, he excused himself and waited in the SUV to give the three females some
space.
The half hour they spent drinking tea and saying their goodbyes was heartfelt and more than a little tear filled.
With the imminent danger, River and Grandma Lucy might not have the luxury of returning whenever they felt like it like River had been promised initially.
Kai and Oliver turned up outside far too soon.
The stern bodyguard wanted to get back to plane.
River hugged Klara tightly and said her goodbyes.
Dusk was dimming extra quickly behind the tall trees and mountainous terrain by the time they reached the airstrip. The crew was waiting by the steps, ready to lift off.
“Hm. Just got a message from Alpha Hendricks. He wants me to come pick up a parcel for the council,” Oliver read the text and shook his head. “I’ll be back as soon as I can and we’ll go.”
Paul escorted Grandma Lucy onto the plane as Oliver zipped back down the road at breakneck speed.
“Does he know how to relax?” River asked Kai as they meandered along the paved landing strip in the fading light.
“I swear he’s a different person when we are out here.” Kai shook his head. ruefully. “The wolf that used to sneak into the kitchens and steal pies for us to eat in the middle of the night is still in there somewhere.”
The tree line loomed over them.
Kai nodded his head for them to keep walking. River bit her lip and kept pace with him.
Chapter 12
In the shadows of the wood she found herself closer to him.
Her hand found his and their fingers entwined.
After several full flips of her stomach River managed to slow her pounding heart.
“Kai?”
“Yeah?”
“I, um, what am I? Why am I so different from other wolves. And don’t play s tupid. I know you know way more than you’ve told. Mostly because you haven’t told me anything except that we are supposedly fated mates.”
Da mn it River. Way to ruin the mood.
Kai led her out into a small clearing and he pulled away, tugging his shirt up and over his head.
River’s eyes did not widen.
Nope.
“I think it would be a whole lot easier to just show you. At least to start. with.”
Kai’s smile was warm and inviting. And so not fair.
Neither were his abs.
His marble sculpted pecs.
So not fair.
How was she supposed to stand her ground and get the answers she needed with him standing there being gorgeous?
What might have been a full throated growl of frustration escaped her lips.
Heat flashed through her whole body.

“Well. Turn around, then,” River snapped. Kai gave her that stu pid, knee- quiver inducing half smile and raised his eyebrows. “Not everything is served on a silver platter, Your Highness.”
Kai’s full belly laugh rocked her back on her heels. No one should sound that good laughing.
Thankfully, he complied and wandered across the clearing and into the
trees.
River hastily undressed.
OK. Shift.
A shiver rippled through her.
Nothing happened.
Seriously. Not the time for stage fright, she-wolf.
“Um. Kai?”
No response.
Great.
River huffed an irritated grunt and crossed the clearing, covering herself
as best she could with her hands.
Something rushed by behind her.
River spun, her breath catching. “Not funny, Kai!”
The shadow flicked in the corner of her eye, zipping past her again. This time she felt a nip at the back of her leg.
“Ow!” River felt her anger starting to bubble up. “Cut it out!”
She grasped her rising temper and gritted her teeth.
Then she felt it. Like a subtle breath of anticipation on her neck.
This time when the phantom sped toward her, she lunged to the side,

dodging. In mid leap she felt herself shift lightning fast.
And she slammed into her assailant, knocking him into a tumble.
The honey colored wolf growled as he regained his feet and faced off against her.
“Quit teasing me!” River blasted in her thoughts toward him.
“Then do something about it!” His response was pure challenge, taunting. Then he was gone, bounding off through the darkened woods.
River was already in a full sprint after him.
Two shadows weaved in and out of the massive trunks, sprinting and leaping.
Kai was unreasonably fast. Somehow, she knew his physical strength outmatched hers. But she also knew, somewhere deep inside, that she was faster. So much faster.
With hardly a thought she overtook him, wheeling in to snap at his flank.
Kai shouldered her back, almost driving her to the ground.
Lesson learned.
The wolf-prince hurdled a fallen trunk. River leapt to the side, precision. agility shooting her from ground to log to the lowest branches of the trees.
Then she was lost in the foliage above him, keeping pace and gliding along like she had wings.
As long as she didn’t think about it, her paws instinctively found the branches soaring from one tree to the next.
She had never felt so powerful.
River felt Kai’s thoughts reaching out for her, asking for her location.
Before he could pinpoint her, she scurried down a sla nting bough and cut him off as he rounded a bend.
Chapter 12
Her aim was flawless, raking his front paws out from under him.
But she underestimated his response.
Instead of rolling over her, he latched onto the scruff of her neck with his teeth and dragged her along in his tumble.
Their bodies rolled down the slope together.
River’s head swam with dizziness. She felt herself falter out of her wolf form, trapped under Kai’s weight.
She was still panting hard as her vision cleared.
Kai was gasping as well.
River opened her eyes and found him staring at her, his mouth hanging open ever so slightly, just inches above her.
Then she became very aware of every inch of his firm, statuesque body pressed against hers. His skin was warm and smooth, contrasting the cool night air.
His hips shifted as she moved her legs, unintentionally settling him between her thighs.
And she felt him harden against her.
A soft gasp puffed from her lips at the size of him, rubbing gently up along
her c lit.
Shivers of pleasure raked down through her legs as he arched his back slightly. His lips grazed her clavicle.
“River,” he whispered almost inaudibly. Passion laced with desperation and hunger in his word. She had never heard her name spoken with such
reverence.
Boiling heat enveloped her from head to toe at his touch.
Kai moved again, this time dragging his length back down and River felt his head slide down through her dripping anticipation. Fire ignited in his

eyes as he felt her soaked to his touch.
River nearly screamed with the surge of desire.
Kai held himself back, leaning down to taste her lips with his and River thrust her tongue back in response to his, twining them together, so soft and perfectly sumptuous.
River reached down, gripping him in one hand and took a breath, preparing to guide him into her.
A bored voice from a few feel
stopped her dead, her heat
plummeting to solid ice instantly and drew a stifled growl from Kai.
“Ahem, I suppose this is a bad time to let you know the plane’s leaving.”
