River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 20

Chapter 20
“Drink it all, you foolish girl!” The crisp rasp of his voice was harsh in her
ears.
River’s head was pounding.
Where was she?
Jakov’s voice growled again and his fingers forced her lips apart.
He was trying to kill her!
Panic welled up through the fog and she tried to lash out, but he batted her hands away like she was a child.
No. No, no, no.
River didn’t want to die.
Even more so, she didn’t want her baby to die.
But she was too weak. Thick liquid filled her mouth from the rim of the cup he forced between her lips.
It was swallow or choke and drown.
Almost as soon as it hit her stomach she heaved, spewing onto the cold
tile.
Strong fingers gripped her like steel cables around her, lifting her up to the toilet.
Where she hung out for a few minutes, emptying everything inside her from the previous day.
“Good G od, you insufferable little twit. Won’t even help me save your life. No wonder Victoria got the better of you,” his jeering sounded a little.
strained with worry.
“V-Victoria?”
“Poisoned you. Yes.”
Chapter 20
“How did you-?”
“I could smell the foulness on your breath from the third floor,” he snapped, waving a hand dismissively. “She should have been much more. careful with what she used. A real saboteur knows what poisons are
undetectable. Honestly, poppy and mugwort?”
“Sounds like you know a lot about that kind of scheming.” It may have come out a bit accusingly.
“Rightly so! My father insisted on my training in every sort of fighting, strategy; anything related to dealing with enemies. Political or otherwise.” Jakov toyed with his cufflink absently.
He did it a lot, she realized. She also noted the emblem engraved in the
metal.
A house emblem of the Duke?
“What a childhood that must have been,” River sat back against the wall, wiping her mouth. She found Jakov surprisingly easy to talk to.
At least in the wake of nearly dying.
Maybe it was because he saved her life,
Definitely not because he was at all likable.
“Ha! What childhood?”
River frowned.
“Oh, don’t give me that pitying dribble. I don’t need it. I am the spectacular sum of all of my training, and what I chose to make of it.”
“I like that.”
“Anna seems to think you of the same cut. I haven’t decided yet.”
“You are a lot closer to her than either of you let on,” River said.
“A nna lise is my closest friend. The only refuge from my violent home I ever had.”
Chapter 20
River took Jakov’s hand, helping her up. She swiftly rinsed her face off and her mouth out.
“Is that why you’re here this time? Trouble at home?”
“Trouble in this home. Anna asked me to come. And good thing she did.”
He dabbed a towel at corners of her mouth and pinched her check. The slender, perfectly poised male led her out to the bedroom to the glorious looking bed.
The sheets were pulled back for her already.
River cast a sly, wary glance at Jakov.
“Please, You’re not my type.”
“Brunette?” River scoffed.
“Pregnant and soon-to-be-mated to another,” he corrected sarcastically. “I will sleep in the lounge outside. Just in case anyone decides to come back to finish you off. And to check on you. Can’t have you fading away in the night.”
Something in the words rang a bell in River’s addled mind.
“That’s why you’re here. Someone did that to the King, didn’t they?”
“Ah, not so dense after all. Now get some sleep. We still have to figure out what to do about Malachi and his leech.” He spun on his heel.
“Jakov? Thank you.”
“Pff. You’re smothering me.”
River felt a grin pull at the edges of her mouth as sleep pulled her under.
One solitary beam of murderous fire was searing a hole into her head.
River opened her eyes.
One bright shaft of sunlight clipped through the curtains right onto her eyelids. How long had she been out? It felt like she had only just closed her
eyes.
Chapter 20
Sleep was caressing her brain again when the bed shook violently.
River swung first, asked questions later.
“Ow!”
Even An na lise’s yelps of pain sounded musical.
Must be a princess thing.
“You are clearly recovered enough to have your strength back! Get up, sister River.” Anna crouched a few inches from River on the bed, rubbing her jaw.
“I could sleep for two more days.”
“Four days is too long for anyone not in a coma. You had us worried.”
“What?!” River was up. “I was out for two days?”
“Technically two and a half. It’s afternoon again.” Anna shooed her into the bathroom where the tub was already full and steaming. “Get in!”
The princess was impressively capable of seeing to her needs.
During the bath she passed her a plate of sweet porridge and some fruit.
River was dressed and out the door soon after, trailing the golden haired female out into the gardens and directly into the woods. The food, the bath, and the fresh air had her feeling alert and almost peppy by the time they reached their destination.
“Where are we?” River asked looking around at the stone cleft. It was an overhang that formed a neat little room beneath it.
“Somewhere that we are not likely to be noticed or overheard.” Oliver stepped out of the shadows, a phantom from thin air.
“Whoa. You’ve got to teach me that trick!”
“Good luck. His lips are tighter than his as s when it comes to training techniques,” Anna rolled her eyes and brushed by Oliver in the confined space, letting the tips of her breast graze him.
Chapter 20
The pale captain flushed red.
Anna made it worse by peering back over his shoulder at his cr otch to gauge his reaction.
River kept her eyes level, avoiding looking down.
Oliver’s pants were…rather snug.
And she says she doesn’t like him. B ulls hit.
“Why are we meeting out here like rebels?” River changed the subject before things could get even more awkward.
“Ahem. Right. It’s Malachi. Marquess Jakov thinks he’s under some sort of influence.”
“The influence of his balls,” An na muttered near Oliver’s ear. She was pushing it.
Oliver growled at her and she sk ipped back. “I agree with the Marques’s theory.”
“You don’t have to use Jakov’s title, Ollie.” An n alise was impatiently pacing the alcove. “But you do have to get to the point!”
“Sometime this century would be nice” River added sweetly.
Oliver glowered. “You two are…intolerable together.”
But he got to the point.
Malachi had been spending every hour of every day with Victoria. The only time he was away from her was when he slept, and when she sent him. out on errands for her to the nearby town.
He hadn’t even bothered to come see River, check on her. Not to mention. the gift he promised her.
It hurt her feelings. And hearing about Victoria made River want to break something.
Tear something apart.
Chapter 201
Like Victoria Pullman’s st upid face.
Oliver continued to fill her in on the details of the past few days that she was out. The staff had even started to notice the prince acting weird. Oliver had them reporting everything Kai did back to him.
And together with Jakov and An nalise, they had come up with a plan.
An hour later, they were parked just outside the closest village.
Right on schedule, Malachi showed up.
“So we just have to nab him, or get him to go with us.”
“I can do that. Then what?”
“We only need to keep him long enough for Jakov to search for what Victoria has been using on him. He thinks she uses the time he’s out either brew something up or to get it into place to administer it to him.”
“Like in his sheets!” Anna raised one finger to her claim.
River cringed at the idea of Victoria anywhere near Kai’s bed.
Or anywhere near Kai, period.
Her only relief was that she felt sure now that this was all a misunderstanding. A ploy.
She was going to get Kai back.
Then kick that sorry bi tch’s as s.
Kai came out of a coffee shop carrying a fancy, whipped-topped monstrosity of a drink.
“He’s heading around the side toward that flower shop. Alright I’m going
to-” River cut off short.
An nalise was already out of the car and stalking her brother, a black sack and some zip-ties in her hand.
Where the hell did she get those?!
Chapter 20
“Ollie! This wasn’t the plan. Do something!” River hissed.
Oliver nodded. Then he ran after the princess.
He immediately dropped into a crouch behind her as they followed. Malachi into an alley between buildings. The agile male unlooped a rope
from his belt.
Oh, for the love of…
River waited another second, battling with herself before she gave in and. joined them.
Kidnapping it is!
No sooner had she made the mouth of the alley that a deep grunt and a
crash echoed ahead.
Followed by a sprinting Kai with a bag over his head.
Anna squeaked breathlessly, “Riv, get “im!”
River didn’t bother to check on her friends as she took off after the prince. He was absurdly fast.
And somehow he managed to dodge a lamp post, leap a barrier, duck under a tree branch and off into the surrounding woods with his hands. tied behind his back and blind.
River mimicked his steps perfectly, if a bit faster for being unencumbered.
Once they hit the deeper woods where the spaces between the trees opened up she could gain on him.
But of course he wasn’t going to go along with any plan.
“Kai! Wait!” She tried his name a few times to no avail.
His scent told her more or less why.
He was in a full fight or flight panic..
She could smell the fury and fear.
Chapter 20
Oliver explained that he had been behaving erratically, paranoid and over protective of Victoria the past few days. He was defensive and aggressive.
And then someone had decided to try to jump him in a dark alley!
“I underestimated how strong he is!” Oliver st more than a little annoyed and in quite a lot of pain.
back in her thoughts,
She must have projected her criticism more forcefully than she thought.
Oliver caught up alongside her in wolf form. He was favoring one side a bit on his ribs.
“Nice black eye.” River thought at him, still running hard.
“You can see it in my wolf form?” Oliver whined across the link.
“Aw, I think it makes you look manly for a change!” Anna chimed in.
“I hate you both.”
“He’s shifting!” Anna surged forward with Oliver, rushing for Kai’s flanks. before he could transform. The prince’s wolf would be more than a match for one of them, and in his state, maybe more than the three of them could handle.
But they weren’t quick enough. Kai leapt straight into wolf form, bursting the ties, his clothes and the bag over his head.
River prepared to shift. Good thing she wore something she didn’t really care about.
Shorts and shirt tore as she dove out of her shoes and into a full sprint on four paws.
Kai wasn’t stopping to fight.
Small victories.
Oliver gave short, quick orders.
Anna herded her brother west. Oliver harried him with swift, biting attacks, leading him on into a chase. River took up the back of the “V”,
Chapter 20
closing in on him, waiting for the moment to take him down.
She had to be deadly fast.
But hopefully not deadly.
Or wind up dead.
The old barn appeared ahead, just as Oliver described. He swerved, bolting through the big door. Kai was hot on his trail.
River closed the gap and jumped. Just as she barreled into him driving him to the dirt in the dim of the barn, the doors at each end slammed
shut.
Then the fight for her life began.
Kai snarled, twisting under her, all teeth and claws.
It was all she could do to just stay out of those jaws.
“Kai! Listen to me!” She had to get through to him.
Her leg bent under her, eliciting a squeal. Kai hopped away, startled by her pained sound. He lowered his head and growled menacingly, pacing.
“Look at me. Smell me. I am your Fated Mate. Remember, Kai!” She drove her thoughts with all of her will. “I…I need you.”
The huge wolf tossed his head. His eyes cleared for a second.
River stepped toward him. “Kai?”
He lunged.
River flinched, waiting for the bite that would end her life.
Instead she heard a thump and when she opened her eyes, Malachi was on. his side, going into convulsions and foaming at the mouth. A red dart protruded from his back leg.
She was at his side immediately, back in her skin and holding his head as he began vomiting. Panicked, River looked around to find Oliver dropping
