River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 24

Chapter 24
The castle was on high alert.
Jakov sent word as soon as he returned home adding to their suspicions.
Duke Noah, his father, had vanished.
The prince and princess’s cousin vowed to do all he could from there, and to return to assist them as soon as he was able. They might need all the help they could get.
Every guard and the staff carried themselves in a state of constant tension.
Suspicious glances and watchful gazes looked for an attack from the Duke around every corner. Oliver and his wolves questioned anyone coming and going.
The captain tried to keep things under wraps, but news of Victoria’s attempt on River and Kai’s lives was common knowledge.
Victoria could not have been the only agent sent to stir up trouble.
Everyone was paranoid.
Jakov all but promised that if his father was making a move, it was multi- tiered, highly deceptive, and would come from a dozen directions at once.
Malachi was with Oliver from sun up to sun down, essentially functioning as the King in every capacity. They were in constant communication with the packs, trying to nail down leads and ensure stability in the wolf kingdom.
And ferret out any rumors surrounding the Duke.
He was a ghost. No one seemed to know anything.
Except that almost every pack Alpha feared of uprising. Rumors had begun to circulate that the King was ill, Or dead. Rogue wolves were leaving packs, forming dangerous gangs that harassed smaller groups and families of wolves.

Chapter 24
The movements were not as chaotic as they should have been.
Almost someone was coordinating the riots and attacks.
The Alphas were clamoring for a response from the Lycans.
River was on edge.
And not because she had been targeted.
She had been singled out because she was Kai’s mate. River was terrified for the prince.
Another attack could come from anywhere. Poison. A knife in the back.
So she stayed as near as she could over the passing days. The routine had. an added bonus. River was able to start learning all about how to run a kingdom.
Grandma Lucy was always around nearby for useful advise, as well. She was tasked, along with an elite force of guards, to stay with the King at all
times.
River was getting the hang of this.
Not that she felt particularly qualified to be a ruler, but she found that she wanted to learn. It was impossible to pick up every logistical ability and process in just a few days, but Kai and Oliver included her in meetings and
tactical reviews.
The staff responded in kind. She wasn’t just the prince’s girlfriend or proposed mate.
She really belonged here.
Of course, Oliver was Oliver, so he was stern and always quick to correct. He demanded a lot from her to allow her along with their duties.
But he respected her.
And she was becoming rather fond of him despite his surly nature.
Maybe she was biased because of his unwavering loyalty to her lover.

Oliver never let his prince out of his sight for long.
Until they got word of another attack.
The young warrior reluctantly gathered his men and only under direct orders from Kai, left to see to the protection of a town not far from the borders of the royal lands. They needed information, and facing off against one of these rogue groups seemed like the best way to get it.
River and An nalise promised to guard Kai with their lives in his absence.
It was the only way to get him to go.
And a little coercion on the part of the princess in the form of a nibble on the ear when she thought no one was looking.
River caught it, and the failed attempt at staying calm that had Oliver nearly panting.
There was definitely something going on there.
River and Anna sat in the bleachers of the training grounds watching Kai and several of the guards spar. The males glistened with sweat in the bright afternoon. Every so often they would alternate into their wolves. and continue the battling.
“Sl oppy. See how he lets down his guard there on the left?” Anna gestured to her brother below..
“It’s a feint! Look, I have seen him to it a dozen different ways. He’s drawing them in…there! Total knock out.” River clapped.
“Good eye. But it’s still a dangerous maneuver. Leaves too much of an opening. Kai is absurdly strong and quick, so he can pull it off.”
“True. Case in point…” River pointed to another pair of warriors. Both females flinched at the sound of a snapping bone echoing up from the ring.
Wolves sparring was a high risk sport.
Fortunately the castle boasted the best doctors and healers in the world.

And wolves healed incredibly quick.
Even so, the guard would be stuck on night watch rotations for a few weeks in the meantime. It was a lesson learned.
“Which is why we have to use our superior speed and cleverness.” Anna recited in her instructor’s voice.
River agreed whole heartedly. So far, she had only suffered a couple of broken fingers, bruises and a bl oody lip every now and then.
But she healed a hell of a lot quicker than the average wolf.
The critique of the training session continued for a while with more than a few laughs and jeers. They had already trained earlier in the day. Now they were on Kai duty, following him around all day.
River was more than a little proud to remain undefeated.
Except by Anna. The princess’s experience and incredible reflexes made her a match for River’s speed and raw power. She still needed practice, but she could hold her own.
She felt ready for any threat that might come their way.
Until Oliver returned from defending the town with several of his warriors wounded, and three dead.
The rogue wolves didn’t survive the encounter at all.
Seeing the captain, her friend, after a real battle w a s…so bering to say the
least.
He had trained his whole life for it. But losing warriors under his command was something she couldn’t understand. Oliver looked like he had aged several years in a matter of days.
“Get them to the medical wing. I must speak with Malachi at once.” The big male looked like he could fall asleep on his feet.
Anna clenched her fists, clearly keeping herself from running to him. “Captain. Would it be prudent to take a rest first?”
Chapter 24
“No. I need to see Kai.”
River nodded and shrugged at Anna. “He’s in the shower. I will get him.”
Under any other circumstances, River might have slipped into the steamy. water with him to indulge in a littler post-training release. Instead, she averted her eyes to keep her thoughts from running wild and delivered her message.
Kai was dressed and in his office within a minute, his hair still dripping slightly.
Deep concern mixed with anger filled his eyes as he beheld his best friend and bodyguard. But he was a ruler, through and through. He knew what came first before he could see to Oliver’s needs.
“Speak.”
“Rogues were laying siege to the town. The pack was overwhelmed. We lost three.”
Kai slammed his fist onto the desk.
“We saved every citizen. Eliminated the rogues.”
Malachi straightened, nodded his approval.
“That’s not all. The pack Alpha informed us that he had been chal by one of his own. And that every other Alpha he knows has had the thing happen.”
All three of the wolves looked perplexed by the news. River wasn’t exact clear on what it meant. She knew no one had ever challenged Alpha
Baldwin.
“Messenger.” A knock came at the door.
“Come,” Kai clipped authoritatively.
A young female stepped in smartly saluting. “Urgent message from Pack Ridgeway.”

River started. That was Aunt Klara’s old pack. Where she was hiding now.
“They report that a new Alpha must be chosen immediately. Theirs suffered a heart attack in the early hours of yesterday morning.”
“Dismissed,” Oliver showed the messenger out, likely to question her further on the specifics of her communication with the pack.
“Some timing for a new ascension.”
“It sounds like someone want to draw you out. It could be a trap,” Anna snapped.
“Or a ploy to see what condition I am in. To see if a certain agent accomplished their mission and brainwashed me. The Duke must be wondering what happened to Victoria by now.” Kai tapped his chin.
“Again, a trap,” River reiterated.
“Either way, I have to go to an ascension.”
“You can’t go right now! Not when things are so…”
River almost said “f ucked”. It didn’t seem appropriate to cuss given the circumstances. Grandma would wash her mouth out.
“But that’s just it! Oliver and I have been around and around on this. We cannot go into lockdown,” the prince argued.
“Because you want things to appear normal,” Anna finished for him.
“Yes. Things have to go on, business as usual. Our people need stability. They can’t see weakness in our leadership.”
“You’re right. But that’s not the only reason, is it?” River asked.
“You think that by going about your business you can draw out the Duke.” Anna narrowed her eyes.
“It crossed my mind.”
“It’s dangerous, Kai. Flaunting it in his face like that. It’s also the only way we are going to confirm that Noah is behind this.” River leaned over the

desk with a determined look. “When do we leave?”
Malachi pushed his chair back and narrowed his eyes at her. “You want to come with me?”
“Everywhere. Always. Especially now.”
“It might be dangerous…” He looked worried.
“More than it already has been? Besides. You need me to watch your back. Oliver can’t be next to you all the time. But I can. And it will look far more appropriate for you to have your mate along with you.”
“And, as usual, I get to sit back here on my hands and manage the castle. Ugh.” Anna stood and stomped across the room dramatically.
Kai nodded at River’s statement, smirking at his sister’s antics.
“And probably pis s the Duke off even more that we are both alive and well,” River added.
“Alright. But I suppose convincing me doesn’t even matter anyway.”
River smiled. “Why’s that?”
“Because you’ve clearly made up your mind, and I know better than to try to argue with you.”
“Good prince. I’m going to go pack my bags.”
River was ready to act. And she had also made up her mind about. something else.
They were heading toward the airfield within the hour.
Oliver met them there, looking cleaned up but still worse for wear. Kai and River both knew better than to argue with him, though.
The flight would take several hours, during which he would be able to sleep, at least.
River and Kai buckled in for take-off, but soon after, River followed Kai into the larger bedroom and closed the door. The prince was going on

about the packs, castle business, what they would do when they land.
“Kai…”
River waited patiently, quietly.
“We need to stay hidden when we land. I’ll have to give you the run down about-”
“Kai.” He finally stopped talking and looked at her.
River let her dress slink to the floor around her. Her shoulders arched back, pushing out her chest to him, letting him see her completely.
Pebbles of goose bumps chilled her skin with excitement.
Kai’s eyes widened. She heard his heart start to pound in his chest. She kept her eyes on his. It was far too tempting to look down at what she was doing to him.
River bit her lip.
Now or never.
The words slipped out of her with a life of their own, full of desire and
love.
“Tell me what to do. I want this. I am ready to accept the bond.”
