River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 28

Chapter 28
Tracking the males turned out to be extremely easy.
First of all, they stayed on foot for the first day out, carrying light packs.
River also cheated.
Well, cheated wasn’t the right word.
She just…prepared a couple of advantages.
The harness she made for her pack worked surprisingly well, not binding too much, but holding the bag in place across her back. It helped that her fur provided additional padding.
Saddlebags?
Doggy bag?
Wolf-pack? Ha!
She would have all her gear whenever they caught up with any hunters, giving her the benefit of weapons, clothing, and a medical kit.
She didn’t bother with food.
It was heavy, and she wasn’t planning on shifting back much.
Rabbits and the odd ferret sufficed for meals.
By the second day, she was extremely grateful for the light weight.
Apparently whatever clue or lead Oliver’s network of information had drummed up put a group of hunters fairly close to the castle’s lands. That explained why they hadn’t taken the plane.
River wasn’t sure how she would have fared stowing away in the luggage compartment, but she had been prepared to bundle up and weather it.
She was also concerned when they only jogged that whole first day, camping in the woods at night. That meant the threat was dangerously close.
Chapter 28
Unless they had a vehicle.
The second day wasn’t nearly as enjoyable.
Oliver led them to a hidden garage where they loaded up into a jeep.
River spent the entire portions of the day at a dead run. She managed to take breaks when they encountered rough terrain, or cut off the main road
to make better time.
Thank goodness for Lycan powers.
That night she overheard Oliver filling Jakov and Kai-in.
“From the reports, they just came through Ravendall. Most of the pack. there managed to hide and left town empty and abandoned.”
“Which means they’d be heading to Green Briar next.” Kai murmured, studying the map.
“There’s no way Green Briar could evacuate in time, even with warning. Not with their population.” Jakov shook his head. He sat apart from the other two, laying back languidly on his bedroll, seeming almost disinterested.
“But with that many wolves to take on, the hunters will have to regroup. It we can cut them off…here….we could track them back to their camp. Find out their numbers,” Oliver posited.
River skirted the camp and found a better view from another rocky perch
That’s when she smelled it.
A faint hint of leather.
River vanished into the night, staying completely hidden and silent as sh zeroed in on the scent.
There.
The hunter was wrapped in black fabric, hiding most of his scent. He approached from downwind.

Chapter 28
River fell into step behind him.
Was this a scout?
No. This was an assassin.
Black painted silver daggers jutted from each hand.
The stalker was right behind Jakov.
There was no time. No good path to take him out without revealing herself.
River took two steps at a run and launched into the assassin’s back, latching her teeth onto whatever she could and dragging him down into the center of the males’ camp.
Oliver reacted faster than the rest, kicking River swiftly in the ribs and off her prey while disarming the hunter in the same movement with a stomp
of his foot.
Kai dragged the stunned human to his feet and slammed him into the side of the jeep.
“Kai. Stop. Tie him up. We can get useful info out of him,” Oliver clipped, resting a hand on his prince’s shoulder. Kai reluctantly obeyed.
Then he turned on River as she recovered her breath from the kick.
A snarl curled his lips.
“What. The. F uck. River?’
River raised her wolf head stubbornly before darting behind a tree to s and drag on a little slip from her bag to cover herself.
“Let me guess. Moondust?” Kai was clearly torn halfway between rage and laughing exasperation.
“No,” River snapped.
“Moondust wouldn’t have hidden her completely.” Oliver scratched his chin, securing the ropes and a gag on the hunter.
Chapter 28
“Ah. Let me guess. A little Pennyroyal and Bloodroot to hide your
presence from us? I knew I should have locked up my journal,” Jakov said tersely, but a little smirk found its way through his frown.
He definitely slipped her a wink of approval.
Kai glanced at Oliver, then back at River.
“Um…why don’t you two go talk it out and Jakov and I question this low- life?” Oliver suggested bluntly.
River sighed and threw a pleading glance at the other two males as she followed Kai off into the woods.
Great. Lecture time.
He walked for a while, until they were mostly out of range of the others. Finally he whirled on her, his mouth working a few times in frustration..
This is the thanks she gets for saving their as ses?
She started to say just that when he cut her off.
“Why can’t you just-” he started. River’s own anger rose to the challenge.
“Do as I’m told? Put up with waiting at the castle like Anna?”
“Anna knows that she has responsibilities!”
“Which she has grown up having. She’s a princess. I am not obligated to do the same!”
“Unless I obligate you to!” Kai threw his hands up in anger.
“Well then, I guess you should have ORDERED me to stay, Your Highness!” River laid the patronizing on thick.
“That’s not- I- You! I just can’t stand the idea of you getting hurt! Getting killed!”
“And you think I have it any easier? Worrying about you not coming back At least if I am there, I can protect you. Help you! Or die by your side.” River slammed her fist into a trunk, splintering the wood.

Chapter 28
Her breath was heavy and ragged.
“You swore, Kai. Swore to stay by my side, no matter what. That means letting me stay by yours!”
“You are so…50-” Kai sputtered.
“So what? Unwilling to let you push me around?! Admit it! You cannot stand that I don’t bow and worship you like every other female in the castle. Like everyone always has your whole life!” River took a step forward with each word, jabbing her finger at him to make her point.
She finished just inches from his face, their hot breath intermingling.
Denial and anger flashed together through his fiery eyes.
Then Kai kissed her. Hard. Aggressively.
River shoved him off, knocking him back several steps. A growl slipped through her lips. Their glares locked for just a second. One heaving breath.
Oh, now he had done it.
River lunged at him, pushing him up against a tree, slamming her body, then her lips, into his.
Her anger raged hot still, but it fueled a hunger, a release for her. frustrations that had been building for days.
Kai returned her bites and flicks of her tongue just as forcefully.
But she needed this. To vent.
Each time he tried to reach up to grab her, to move her she thrust his hands aside, pressed him back. She tore his shirt apart, biting down on h chest, tasting him with rapid strokes of her tongue over his nipples, up th
side of his neck.
Kai gasped, looking down in shock at her.
And with the hint of a smile on his lips.
Chapter 28
He liked it.
And for some reason that made River just a little more angry.
And h orny.
Grabbing the torn front of his shirt, she spun him around and pushed him down the leaf-strewn ground. She was on top of him instantly, resuming her careless removal of his clothing.
His shirt was scraps, tossed aside.
His pants didn’t stand a chance.
River felt the Lycan fury gathering inside her with every breath. Only this time it wasn’t violence or rage. It was desperate and lustful hunger.
Foreplay was over.
She needed him inside her.
River only paused to tear off the slip she had thrown on.
Kai was more than ready for her.
She was more than ready, too. The cold night air tingling against the wetness running down each of her legs told her just how eager and ready she was.
River guided herself down onto him, sliding him in fast and deep.
The first thrust shook her to the core.
Her pace quickened. Harder and faster, she bounced on him, pressing he hands down with supernatural strength to keep him pinned beneath her. Kai gave little resistance except to arch his back and tilt his pelvis up, allowing her to drive him in deeper.
River felt the oncoming rumble of her pleasure.
Her frantic thrusts became hip gyrating grinds, keeping Kai’s colossal pillar fully inside her, building pressure and tension. Each rotation drove her sensitive apex against him, sending shocks of ever escalating

electricity up through the muscles of her back.
She felt the first throb and clench below her. Kai flexed again, swelling himself slightly. It was more than she could bear. Once more time and she was going to-
Unwind.
She was unmade.
Reborn.
Fireworks went off inside her brain.
She couldn’t even scream. She was clutching Kai and biting down on the crook of his neck so hard that a tiny bit of blood filled her mouth.
Kai’s groan, more of a growl, shook her through and she realized he had done the same.
The pain of his fangs in her flesh was everything.
It was reality and fantasy.
They released each other before it could start to hurt, before the euphoria faded.
For a time they lay in each other’s arms. Their breath shuddering and drenched in pure emotion. River was near to tears. And not for any particular reason. She was just so open. Raw. Vulnerable.
She didn’t have to reach out along the bond to feel Kai.
They were one heart in the moment.
“Ahem. Get up, you filthy animals.” Jakov’s wakeup call was accompan by early morning sun blinking thought the foliage.
Kai and River both blushed a little as they stood, hurriedly dressing from the packs the sneering male left at their feet. Jakov never turned away, but didn’t look at either of them the entire time, as if they were beneath his
notice.

Chapter 28
Back at the Jeep, Oliver had them loaded and ready to move, only wearing
his pants.
Apparently they would be continuing on.
The hunter was nowhere in sight.
River didn’t bother asking what had happened to him.
Good riddance.
Oliver took point as they sprinted through the cool morning, keeping to ravines and dense woods for cover.
They found the first group of hunters an hour out. They never saw the wolves coming.
The second put up moderate resistance.
River was feeling pretty confident about their mission. Until they stumbled onto the third group.
Oliver found the first wolf body a dozen yards from the small
encampment. The stench of dead wolves permeated the air.
They spread out to encircle the group, like they had done twice before.
More bodies. More wolves.
These hunters had taken prisoners.
River very nearly gagged, even in wolf form.
Then she saw and smelled something that turned her veins to ice.
One of the hunters dumped the gutted body of a female over the si ravine. Behind him another grizzly looking b astard lifted one hand, clutching a little ball of fur.
She knew wolf children couldn’t turn until they hit puberty. But her nost didn’t lie.
Something inside her snapped loose.
Blazing, ice cold rage like River had never felt revolted at the sight.
Her vision completely veiled over in shades of violet and deep blue.
River became death incarnate.
There was gunfire. Screaming.
River heard a desperate, shrieking bark.
She realized later that it was her as she tore through over thirty hunters.
It was messy.
Time blurred.
River blinked. She was curled in a ball. In her skin. Wrapped around a tiny little wolf nestled in her arms.
They were driving in the jeep. Too fast Insanely fast.
Jakov was sitting in the seat ahead of her panting, soft s obs coming out with each breath.
“Come on, come on!” Jakov said between whispers to whoever was laying in the seat across him. “Hold on, Kai! Hold on, cousin! We’re almost there!”
“I’m going as fast as I can!” Oliver screamed, unhinged.
Kai. Oh Go d. She remembered. Him taking a bullet for her during er
rampage.
The final thirty minutes to the castle lasted for days in her mind.
The day blurred into hustling along corridors, rushing guards and She was torn from Kai’s side and dragged into another room to be lo at. They had to get the prince into surgery.
She could barely fight back, as worn out and sore as she was. But she nev let go of the tiny wolf in her arms. Grandma Lucy’s voice rang out with snapping orders at a doctor who tried to take the pup.
Chapter 25
Hours later she woke from an involuntary nap to a knock at the door.
Kai?
One of the Castle guard stepped into the room, saluting.
River nodded, giving him permission to speak.
“Lady River, there is a stranger at the gate, claiming to know you. They say it’s urgent.”
“Did they give you a name?”
“They said that ‘Rapid’ needed to see the prince’s mate at once.”
