River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 29

Chapter 29
River would have run to the gates if she were able.
Only one person in the world would announce themselves as ‘Rapid
Instead she waited, pacing her room, still too sore and bruised to do much. else. She made the guard swear to bring her guest straight here.
As fast as possible.
After what felt like an eternity the door opened.
“Rapid!” Sharp and nasal, it was the most beautiful voice River had ever heard in her life.
“Klara!”
They hugged tightly, carefully avoiding the bundle in her arms.
Klara pulled back, her jaw dropping as she beheld the blanket.
“River! How? When?!”
“Calm down, Klara. She’s not…she’s not mine. And she’s…well I’ll ge to
in a minute.” River’s own words were a muddied mess as she blurted
excitedly. She had to fight back tears.
For multiple reasons. Klara didn’t know any of them.
Don’t cry. Hold it together, River!
She needed to stay clear headed. But Aunt Klara was alive and hei
River managed to get her mind in order enough to call for food an one of the staff before they sat down to catch up.
“You go first!” They both said at the same time. A short, nervous laugh.
“I was so worried, Klara. The hunters…
“You heard?”
tha
“No. We were there. In Ridgeway. I was terrified they had killed you, but

after facing the Duke and-”
“You face off against Noah?”
“Yes! But we had to go to stop the hunters, and then Oliver was shot with silver and…it was such a mess. I didn’t see you the whole time we were there and I worried-”
“I got out, the Alpha, they-”
“Killed him. Yeah. And replaced him with a pawn. The pack will deal with Daniel Corrigan, don’t worry. They know about him now.”
“That’s good, but River…he’s just one. The old Alpha found out the Duke was planting all of those Alphas to weaken the Lycan’s rule. And he made a deal with the hunters. He facilitated them coming back. Funded them.”
“What? We went hunting for the hunter’s base camp. Kai got shot. All the doctor’s told me is that he is stable. But they are waiting to see if he wakes up.”
“Oh, Rapid, I am so sorry. That complicates things for me, too. I was coming here to warn the King and the prince. To bring the evidence my Alpha discovered.”
“We’ll go see them, then. The King just came out of a coma himself. Maybe Grandma will know what to do. Or Oliver. He’s the Captain of the
Guard.”
“Yes. Good.” Klara sighed, gathering herself a bit. She looked exhausted.
How had she even known how to get here?
River bit down on the dozens of questions for now.
“Eat. Drink. You look like you haven’t lately, Klara.”
Her aunt complied. She drank some of the tea, ate some of the fresh roll the maid trolleyed in. “Tell me. About the child.”
River slowly drew back the blanket revealing the sleeping wolf pup.
Chapter 29
She couldn’t be more than a few months old.
Klara gasped softly.
“How…?”
“We found them. A group of hunters. They had taken wolves as prisoners. We found silver shackles. They were keeping them from turning. Then they would let them out. Force them to turn and…practice on them. There were so many.” River shivered.
Her aunt pressed her lips together and rested her hand on River’s.
“I saw one of them holding her. She was so little.” River sucked in a deep breath. She didn’t want t
tell her aunt what she had done.
Her lip quivered.
“River. Nothing you could ever do would make me love you less. You did what you had to do. You saved this little one.” Tears rimmed Klara’s eyes
“I-I-” A s ob choked her, but she needed to say it. She needed the horrible. taint of the moment out of her. “I didn’t just kill them. I tore them apart. I massacred them.”
One tear fell on the pup’s snout and her little tongue curled out to lick the salty warmth. Then she yawned.
River drew the small, mousy-colored fur-ball close to her chest.
“I have heard stories. Old stories. About were-children shifting in ti intense trauma. For protection.” Klara ran a gentle finger across soft
“I do not regret it. Not for one minute.
“That’s because you claimed her, River. She will need you in the days to come. If we can figure out how to get her to shift back.”
“I think…I think I’ll need her too.” River couldn’t bring herself to tell Klara about her own baby, and that she would never have another of her own.
Thoughts of her own parents echoed through her thoughts. She was an

orphan. Just like this pup.
River silently made an oath in her heart.
This child would have a family.
Like Klara and Lucy had provided for her.
She would be loved.
River sniffed away the last of her tears. “How old do you think she is?”
“It’s impossible to say. This sort of thing is extremely rare. You know who might know something?”
“Grandma,” River laughed out.
Klara helped River back up and together they made their way slowly up to the King’s chambers. The curtains were thrown back, letting brilliant
sunshine flood the apartment.
Micah turned as they entered, a smile playing over his gaunt features.
A teacup shattered.
River watched the two women who had been through hell and high water together met in
together met in the center of the room, sinking down to the floor in an
embrace. Grandma waved to her and River joined them, holding tight for several moments.
Finally, they recovered enough to sit.
For a short time they simply chatted. Klara and Grandma took turns. holding the sleeping wolf-pup, making idle conversation about the possibilities, the worries and dangers ahead.
Grandma said she would research any similar cases in the royal library.
See? Grandma always knows what to do.
Before long, Jakov, An nalise, and Oliver joined them.
Klara informed the King and the royals of her news.
Chapter 29
The Duke’s son paced, tapping his cheek with a slender finger.
“If my father is in contact with the hunters, he will know of the attacks. He will know we retreated.”
“He has us running like fools,” Oliver growled..
“Which is why I think he will try to take the castle soon. His cards are played. The packs are sca ttered and scared. To his mind, this is our weakest moment,” Jakov asserted.
“Isn’t it? The King is in no condition to lead. The Prince is bedridden.” Grandma simply outlined the facts. She was not one to give into despair.
River watched the realization pass through her friends.
Her family.
What were they going to do? They needed a plan. Leadership.
Anna sat up suddenly, looking at the bedroom.
“H-hello?” a weak voice said.
Everyone present rushed to the prince’s side.
Malachi looked pale. Bleary eyed.
River sidled up to the bed on her knees, taking his hand lovingly in hers.
“Oh, Kai! I am so relieved. I was worried they said you…” Her words died i her throat. The young male was pulling away from her, no recognition in his eyes.
He looked around the room in the same way. Each face he found only made him back farther into the headboard, nervous and confused.
“W-who are you?” Kai’s voice was vacant except for fear.
“Kai, it’s me. Your mate. River.”
He blinked, his lip quivering slightly.
Chapter 29
River tried to stay calm. She reached out along the bond toward him. For al second she thought she could sense him there, but then…nothing. A darkened wall. Shutting her out.
River wanted to scream.
Not now. Not another setback.
She couldn’t stand it. To survive everything they had only to lose him in in this way!
Klara was at her side, gripping her arms in support. “River-”
“No. I just-“River didn’t bother to finish the sentence on her way out the door.
She stormed blindly ahead for a while, directionless.
Out. She wanted out.
But she couldn’t get out of her own head.
That had always been the problem hadn’t it? The worry. Anxiety. Expectation. Fantasy and disappointment.
Then she gets her dreams. All of them.
Only to have the ripped to shreds.
A moment of peace. That’s all she was ever entitled to! Could a single thing not go right and stay right?
Halls past in a blur of raging thought and storming emotion.
She found herself in the garden out back. One of the Greek numbers with the stone plinths and benches. A familiar figure sat in the shade under a plum tree.
Victoria.
She almost turned and stormed off.
But the female wasn’t who she used to be.
Chapter 29
River had seen to that.
She had also seen to it that Victoria got the care she needed. A place to stay for now. Victoria wasn’t totally gone. The staff let her help out in the kitchen. It gave her something to do.
River almost felt sad for her. Until she remembered why it had unfolded the way it did.
Why all of this had.
River sat down beside her.
“Oh. Hi River.”
“Hi Vicky.” It helped if she didn’t use her old name.
“Um. Tory, please. I like Tory better.”
“Oh. OK. Tory it is.” River paused for a second and then thrust out her hand. “Nice to meet you Tory, I’m River.”
“I know that, silly!” Tory laughed, slightly flabbergasted, but she took her
hand and shook it.
They sat in peaceable silence for a minute.
“I remember things. Some things I did. Bad things.”
River tensed. Could her old rival come back from this new, placid and
kind state?
“Like what?” she asked tentatively.
“Most things are blurry. Mixed up. A lot is gone. But more than wh remember why.” Tears dribbled down along her high cheekbones.” wanted more. To be happy. To not hurt anymore.”
“But you hurt others doing it.”
“I know. That was wrong. But I lost everything back home. What little I had.”
Chógary
River had never thought of it like that. That Victoria had had a rough life. An abused life. And then she had lost her boyfriend, possible mate and any chance of rising to anything other than under her father’s thumb.
“When I saw a chance to get more. I fought for it.”
The meaning started to dawn on River
“You have to. When you get something good. Anything good. You fight for it. To keep it.”
River felt like she had been slapped in the face.
She had been so caught up in the moment. So selfish. And she had reverted right back to the shamefaced child she used to be. Running. Trying to hide and be alone to hurt.
But she had people. Who loved her. Who needed her.
Who needed someone to make some tough calls right now.
And Kai couldn’t do it. Not right now. Maybe he would get better. Maybe he wouldn’t.
That didn’t excuse her abandoning her responsibilities.
She was about to thank Tory when something w hi zzed past her, grazing her arm and drawing a ragged cut. The bolt shattered the planter nearby.
“Tory, get down!”
She followed River’s orders instantaneously.
More bolts zipped by.
A castle guard shouted from the wall above them and fired his rifle o the woods, eliciting a painful cry.
It bought River and Tory the time they needed to bolt for the door.
Inside the castle was coming alive as River sped up the stairs.-
“Lieutenant! Attack on the southwestern perimeter. Take your squad and

reinforce the wall there.” She shouted in passing. Other warriors took her commands with smart salutes.
Sound the alarm!
Messengers!
Mobilize the guard!
River reached the grand balcony above the entry hall and looked out over the land below. The Duke was coming.
Anna, Oliver, and Jakov found her there. A dozen guards stood to attention.
River caught her balance from the run and turned around, looking from one of her friends to the other, to the guards.
“What is everyone waiting for?” Why wasn’t Oliver or Anna doing
anything?
“Um. Your orders, milady,” one guard offered hesitantly.
“What do you mean ‘my orders”?”
Anna stepped to her side, looking her right in the eye. “You still don’t get it, do you sister River? You are a Lycan. And more than that. You are a leader. Our leader.
Oliver nodded once, sternly.
“So lead us already!” Jakov snapped.
River took a deep breath.
“Call up reserves. Arm every able body in the castle. Ready the defenses.” River let her fangs show as she turned toward the open window, sounds of the approaching forces just reaching them through the forest.
“If the Duke wants a fight. I’ll f ucking give him one.”
