River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 30

Chapter 30
The first clashes of battle sounded along the edges of the forest.
Her men knew to draw the Duke’s forces out into the open. Not to stray into the woods.
Except for Oliver’s elite force.
Who knew the lands with their eyes closed in the dark.
Two small groups of jet black wolves vanished into the trees. Screams sounded periodically. They were cut off quickly.
Oliver’s elite wolves would cut off any attack from the rear. Herd the opposing forces around the Castle. Make the Duke come at them from the front, across the field to the Northeast of the Castle.
-Duke Noah did not disappoint.
A mass of dark fur and gleaming weapons filled the landscape in front of the castle in a hellish line of violence marching toward the gates.
They had a vast distance to cross.
Which gave the home team a little time to plan.
And they had.
River now stood at the doorway to the room Malachi occupied. He was unconscious again. Regular sleep this time.
If only he could…
No. Not now.
River sighed. She had given her orders. They would have to be enough.
She and Anna were Lycans.
Jakov was their backup.
She had sent the Marquess with her grandmother for the first assault,

much to his protest. His expertise in herbs and potions would be invaluable in giving them an edge and curing the inevitable, poisonous attacks his father would have brought.
He was only to engage if they needed more strength. And as an ace in the hole. As far as they knew, the Duke had no idea he was here.
Grandma was to stay ready with the other medics to accept the wounded. River had no doubt that her grandmother would assume control in the Castle if the need arose.
Klara and River’s pup stayed with the King and Malachi, under guard.
Her pup.
Oliver was directing the maneuver that would drive the Duke into a direct charge.
And she had waited as long as she could.
Anna touched her arm.
It was time to go.
“Stay safe, my love.” River blew a kiss to sleeping Malachi and crossed to Klara and the baby.
“River.”
“Aunt Klara.”
“I love you. Always. And I’m da mn proud of you.”
River nodded and kissed her on the cheek. She couldn’t speak over the lump in her throat.
Then she bent and kissed the little one on her silky soft head.
“Until I return…Audric.”
Klara let out a tiny huff of a s ob. “I will protect her with my life. Just like I did you, Rapid.”

The march to the front gates was a gauntlet of memory for River.
Growing up without parents.
Never really knowing the difference for all the effort on her Grandma and Klara’s parts.
But she had been a worrisome child. Difficult.
She barely recognized that little girl from who she was now.
And only a few short months ago, she was graduating high school. Planning her mating to a joke, a fiction that had been sold to her from a young age. A fiction that could have ended in a life full of abuse and suffering at the hands of an entitled pr ick Alpha.
But she hadn’t been good enough for him.
And she wasn’t a regular wolf.
She hadn’t known what she was.
Except an outcast. A pariah. A curse for her town because of her parents. The whispers and the rolled eyes always keeping her from making friends. From those parts of a normal life.
But what she couldn’t see at the time was that she was held up above the worst of it by her family. Loved. Protected from becoming something like
Victoria.
And all of it so she could be here. Now,
So she could fight for the freedom of the entire wolf world.
River wasn’t sure if she believed in destiny.
She only just started to believe in ‘Fated Mates. Even if hers was lost for now. She would help him find his way back. Or she would sacrifice herself so that another might lead and let wolves continue to live good lives.
No, she didn’t believe in destiny.
Everything was like it was because of choices. Actions.

Chapter 30
But she did believe in a few things.
She absolutely f ucking believed in her friends. She believed in her pack. and the pack at large that would never bow down.
And she finally, FINALLY believed in herself.
And so did every one of them.
The steadfast pulse of every wolf in the castle backed her and lent her
their confidence.
River and Anna tore through their gowns as they shifted mid run, in the shadows of the gate archway. Her soldiers raised their cries around her, cheering.
Some shifted to follow.
Another resounding howl rippled through the troops above them. Oliver soared out over the gatehouse and landed in a gallop alongside her.
The three of them howled together as they broke out into a dead run.
The answering cry from the packs shook the ground.
Then they collided with the enemy.
Noah’s wolves were feral and savage, many of them chained and scarred. Hunters mingled among them, clearly hating every second of fighting alongside werewolves, but holding their truce for now against the greater
foe.
Attacks came from every direction.
River ducked under a sword swipe. Zig-zagged between three wolves leaving them for her companions to finish as she tore fur, nipped at ea and legs, snagged flesh with her teeth and ripped it away in passing.
She wasn’t trying to kill. Not yet.
Just incapacitate and wound as many as possible for her warriors to finish off. The enemy saw her tactics and tried to close in around her. But they

had never faced off against a Lycan. She was stronger, faster, smarter.
River veered under every blade, narrowly slipping out of every snap of fangs.
She could sense the wolves’ minds. The chaos warring within them between logic and instinct.
Most of them were lost in the wolf mind. Overwhelmed with primitive urges and battle rage. Others were so tortured and beaten that they barely resembled anything more than wild dogs.
She wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. To let them walk away if they would stand down to her wrath.
But all of them had chosen to follow the Duke. She could see it in their
hearts.
To be part of his fear-founded clan.
To hurt and destroy other wolves and packs for their own gains. For their own amusement. To inflict suffering.
River purged herself of all mercy.
She could forgive herself later.
Her flashing attacks got more aggressive, doing more damage.
Shrieks and yelps filled her ears.
All she could smell was the metallic scent of blood and terror.
It went on that way for a long time. It reminded her of all the timest time slip by in anxious worry or trying to space-out and check-out o life in high school. Forget where she was just for a while.
Only now, she lost time, but she couldn’t forget.
Everywhere she looked there were menaces who wanted to end her. To take her kingdom and her family and hurt them.
She would not allow them to live.
Chapter 30
She lost herself to the controlled rampage, staying near enough to her friends and her squad of wolf-guards to avoid getting isolated. Even she could get tired, and with enough bodies, they could take her down.
Soon enough, they had thinned this section of the battlefield to eliminate any worry of being surrounded. River trotted forward, scanning the
terrain.
Her reached out with her Lycan mind, feeling the pain of dying wolves. She pushed that to the side for a moment, then the scents that tried to distract her, the sounds.
River’s senses quested over every blood soaked hill and body filled stream.
There.”
She found him as an absence of wolf mind. Protected from his own Lycan ability. Noah.
“Power by
A yip called her crew to her side and they set off purposefully, clearing another path through the mayhem, aiding their fellow soldiers and finishing off wounded foes.
Warriors peeled off from the main group to let River, Anna, and Oliver make their way more quickly.
It only took the three of them a minute to reach the hill on which the
Duke stood, a limp wolf carca ss in his mouth. He shook his head violently and a sickening snap sounded from the body.
He flung it aside.
“Pathetic. I come calling at my dear relative’s door and this is the welcom party they send out?” The Dukes cold thoughts hammered into River’s head. “ A bitch welp and her little gaggle of sniveling mutts.”
“This bit ch welp is happy to welcome you with open jaws.” River snapped back with as much me ntal force as she could muster. The battle had sapped some of her strength. Not to mention that only this morning she had been too sore to walk properly.
Chapter 30
Adrenaline and Lycan healing only went so far.
“But where are the King and the Prince? I so very badly wanted to see my brother-in-law and my nephew.”
“Cute.” River wasn’t about to indulge the Duke’s sick games. She got the feeling he knew exactly where they were. Kai’s missing presence on the battle field was a gaping hole in their plan.
The prince would only be absent if he couldn’t fight.
Anyone could figure that out.
But she had Anna and Oliver at her back.
“Hm. Indeed. You do have me outnumbered. How are you, niece? Still not good enough to run the show? Figures. Females belong in the bedroom anyway.” His thoughts slapped into them.
Oliver growled threateningly. Anna raised her elegant nose at her uncle.
“I don’t care for your tone, young man.” Noah barked sharply over his shoulder. Clanking metal and chains sounded down the hill behind him. “Nor do I care to fight three when I might take my time killing the prince’s…breeder.”
There was no way Noah could know that.
But the sneer in the words was clear.
River felt the Lycan blood boiling up.
She was about to lunge when two of the biggest wolves she had ever se crested the hill, flanking the Duke.
The hulking beasts looked warped. Distorted and mutated. And their minds were completely void of a human half. They were all beast, whethe by breeding or beating.
And she didn’t have time to speculate.
The Duke rushed her, the two monsters moving impossibly fast to
intercept her friends. In seconds Anna and Oliver were on the defensive, running just to stay out of those impossibly long fangs.
Noah was not much bigger than her, but he was long and graceful.
Every movement he made was smooth and sleek and planned.
After three deflected attacks she was panting hard. She was starting to get worried.
He was a far superior fighter.
But she was younger. Stronger.
River let the red veil her eyes and lashed out in a series of lightning strikes, claws, teeth, tackle, trip.
Noah dodged. No, Noah danced.
In the end he only sported a bloodied nose as evidence of any of her efforts.
She was limping from several carefully placed strikes.
He was toying with her.
River drew in her will, feigned to one side and crashed into the Duke with all her might.
He had not expected the blunt and s loppy attack. Together, they tumbled down the hill, clawing and raking at each other the whole way dow
River came to a halt a few feet from Noah. Her leg was broken. At broken rib was making it agony to breathe.
The Duke rose slowly to his feet, clearly injured, but in better shape her. And he was also out of patience.
River felt despair rear its head inside. She felt helpless…
“MALACHI!” Every fiber of her being cried out to him. Into the void of
their bond.
