River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 5

Chapter 5
River was lost somewhere between a glare and a gawk.
The small lake glistened in the bright, late afternoon sun.
It also glistened off the mostly naked body of the demigod floating far below her in the water. She wasn’t sure if it was the height or the exquisite. muscles that had her knees wobbling.
No one had any I
looking that good.
Or feeling that good to touch.
She could still feel his skin pressing against her back. It sent a euphoric rush along her thighs that reminded her of a runner’s high.
Kai released River as soon as he felt her tense.
Then he simply smiled, and tossed himself off the cliff with an obnoxious, casual little wave. Like he jumped off forty foot drops all the time. It made. her irrationally annoyed for some reason.
Now she stood there with her fists clenched, fighting with herself. Having an audience for her face off with fear was not what she had in mind when
she came out here.
On the other hand, who cared? And she couldn’t just back down now he had already done it.
She should just jump.
So jump.
She should just put her clothes back on and go home.
So go home.
She should flip him off.
that
From this distance she couldn’t quite be sure of the smirk that passed over
Kai’s incredible lips. Was he laughing at her?

Chapter 3
Her toes curled over the roughhewn lip of rock and she caught at shuddering inhale. She didn’t remember stepping up to the edge. River cast one last glance down to make sure he was watching.
Kai definitely made a face. River definitely gave him the finger.
Then she was airborne.
For a second, it was nothing. There was no fear, no sensation, just a sort of horrified realization that she had finally done it and had to live with the
consequences.
The logical part of her brain completely understood.
Every other part of River’s typically overbearing, wary mind shouted that she was a total idiot and tried to retreat back up onto the ledge.
That’s when the gasping surge of falling kicked in and flushed every thought right down the drain.
The rush tightened every muscle in her body, which was good because one instinct was to flail and somewhere in between the high pitched squeal that followed her down she knew flailing would get her hurt when
she hit the water.
Forty feet lasted an eternity but was over in a split second.
She forced herself to catch a tiny breath and clamped her eyed shut right.
before she hit.
Ice cold water surged up around her, enveloping her.
It felt…incredible. Every inch of her skin sang with the impact and the jolt
of delicious cold.
The whole experience felt…quenching,
Like she had been thirsty for so long and hadn’t known how to slake her
thirst.
Adrenaline coursed through her, heightening her senses. Every nerve felt
electric.

Chapter 5
Water warbled the sounds of her movements in the water. Much to her surprise, none of the water had gone up her nose.
River opened her eyes to look around. The lake was crystal clear. Rippling light reached the sandy bottom a few feet below her. Details jumped out at her, each and every colorful pebble and boulder littering the bottom of the small lake.
Her hands splayed, dragging along to feel the liquid between her fingers.
Pushing upward, she realized how deep she was and had a mini panic attack. She forced it down, stroked her arms, and kicked up and broke the
surface.
She couldn’t resist the grin that pulled so hard at her mouth that her cheeks hurt. A soft chuckle to her right matched her own sputtering laugh.
Kai
was hovering nearby, his amber eyes sparkling. Water matted his. honey-colored hair to his head, not darkening it much, but accenting the golden highlights. A few short curls still fought free, playfully bobbing around his cheeks.
Without a thought she drifted to him, breathing heavy, but not labored.
In the shallows, shadowed by an overhanging branch he met her gaze. His tongue flicked over his lips.
Was he nervous? No way.
“You did it,” he stated, not sounding particularly surprised, but maybe a little impressed.
“I did.” She didn’t bother trying to hide her pride in herself. Excitement still hopped and sk ipped through her limbs from the rush.
Kai moved forward a bit, his shoulders poking above the surface of the water. He looked beyond enticing.
Still, she held back from him warily. He floated just a few feet away, circling slightly.
She kept pace, hovering in the shallow waters.

They spun like that for a little while, feeling one another out before he broke the stalemate.
“What’s your name?” He sounded almost hesitant.
“What are you doing up here?” River countered.
“Swimming. Is that OK?”
“That’s not what I meant.” She arched an eyebrow. He let out a little laugh.
After a few moments of thinking he responded, “I like to get away from…
all of it.”
“Me too.” River swept away from him, leading. He followed.
“There’s just too much sometimes. Noise. Talking,” Kai continued.
“Right. I get enough of it in my own head. She never shuts up,” River half giggled. Why was she opening up so easily to him? A warning echoed distantly, begging her to be careful. Not to trust.
“Your wolf, you mean?”
River hid a flinch.
His question was honest, but still stung. Not that it was his fault. He couldn’t know.
“Uh, yeah. And inner dialogue.”
Kai smiled knowingly and nodded, letting it drop.
Near the little beach, River pulled herself into sitting postilion. Kai rose up out of the water slightly to expose his shoulders and chest. Her eyes. tracked down, following that sensuous line that led down across his tight. stomach. She jerked her head down subtly, forcing her eyes away.
“Why do you keep looking away?” Another one of his teasing smiles played in the words.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She blushed. It was the heat of the day. That’s all.

Water sloshed and she glanced up to see him standing closer. The pull of the lake dragged at his tight swim trunks, tugging them down around the little dips in his hips. The soaked fabric hugged close, hinting at other shapes.
Her breath caught slightly as her stomach flipped. She stood up quickly, disguising it as clearing her throat.
Then she remembered she was only wearing her bra and underwear. Not that they were anything lacy or s exy. Still, she had never been in her underwear around a guy before.
Kai’s eyes flicked down for a second, and his lips parted in surprise.
River looked down.
One of her bra straps had snapped hitting the water and hung down, revealing the upper edges of one breast. River spun away, fumbling.
More sloshing. Warmth spread against her back. Kai didn’t touch her, but he was so close. Too close and not nearly close enough.
Get a grip.
“Here, let me help,” Kai offered.
River’s heart pounded a wild rhythm..
Kai’s hand brushed her shoulder as he gently dragged the strap back over and managed to attach it. Every brush of his hand against her skin was a microscopic lightning bolt..
Either a soft, warm breeze or oh-please-wolf-g od- his breath caressed the nape of her neck, sending goosebumps along her arms and a thrill cascading upward along the muscles of her back, up her neck, exploding into tingles along her hairline.
What was she doing?
Kai stayed inches away, but the tips of his fingers scraped delicately along her arm as he lowered it. A current swelled deep in her stomach, and there was a wave of heat that started in her legs and crashed on the shores.
Chapter 5
somewhere deep in her abdomen.
She barely knew this guy!
The thought sobered her slightly, and she inhaled deeply, regaining control of herself and moving away, just enough to turn toward him. A look of wonder graced his expression.
“I…have to be home for dinner. And my clothes are-” River kind of half shrugged, half pointed back up to the ledge.
“Oh, right. Same here.”
As if a mutual agreement had been reached to walk together, they both left the water, Kai pulling on his shoes and throwing his shirt over one shoulder. They hiked back up the ridge in silence for a few minutes.
He followed along, keeping back just enough to give her space. Why was he so intent on her?
“Don’t you have a gaggle of she-wolves waiting to feed you grapes or something?” She couldn’t help remembering the swarm of females surrounding him the day before. Not that she was jealous. Or had the right
to be.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He leaned against a trunk as she scooped up her shoes.
“There are lots of girls…available. That’s all. I would have expected to see you with a h oard of groupies around.” A little grin pulled at her mouth as she peered back over her shoulder, pulling on her damp running clothes.
“I’m sure there are lots of girls available everywhere. But why should I bother with them? I met you first. You seem nice. You gave me a pencil.”
“I want that pencil back. I like the way it writes.” She stuck her nose up at him slightly. Confidence and a hint of defiance rose up in her as she took to the trail.
River felt at home out here. This was her element.
Seeing him in her favorite swimming hole and jumping off a cliff had just

fra zzled her a bit:
“I’m terribly sorry, I’ll return it as soon as possible.” He feigned a shocked and apologetic tone.
“Tomorrow. In class,” River said. The words were loaded with a question.
“No can do. I won’t be in tomorrow. But I could bring it to the Alpha ceremony.” There was a long pause. “If you wanted to go with me?”
River stopped in her tracks.
A tug of war jolted her squarely down the middle. Irritation at the idea of going to the event resurfaced.
And at the other end of the rope – did he just ask her out?
No. He asked her to an event they both had to go to.
“What’s wrong? You are going to the ceremony, right?”
“Uh, yeah. It’s just-” She didn’t know where to start telling him why she didn’t want to go. It would involve divulging her history with the pack, embarrassing memories.
Too much to unload on anyone, especially some beautiful stranger she just met.
“The guy from class yesterday. He’s the one ascending, right?” She nodded. at his question as they headed downhill. “And you two have…history?”
“Kind of. No. Yeah. Ugh.” A grunt of frustration escaped her.
“I know pack stuff can be a bore. Not to mention overwhelming. Crowds. People you don’t really know who pretend to know you.”
River felt her defenses dropping slightly. It was almost like Kai could read her mind. It simultaneously thrilled her and made her horribly uncomfortable. But even the discomfort he gave her was kind of nice.
There was definitely something wrong with her brain.
“On the other hand, I’ve never been to an Alpha ascension like this one.

before. Seems really interesting. Passing the torch, transfer of power.
im supposed to go with my aunt and grandma. But I would like to see you there. They had reached the trail head. Each of them did an awkward shuffle, not knowing how to say goodbye.
“I think I would like to see you anywhere..” he nearly stumbled over the words, hanging the last syllable in expectantly.
‘River. My name’s River.
