River & Her Royal Mate by Larissa Heinrich Chapter 9

Chapter 9
“Rapid, wake up.”
“No.” River grumbled.
“Grandma Lucy and I need to talk to you.”
“About what?”
“About last night.”
“What about last night?”
“Fated mates.”
River shot up, glaring at her aunt.
“It’s too early and I was up way too late to have a school lesson, Klara,” River moaned, plopping back and pulling the blankets up over her face.
Especially about that st upid and pointless topic!
“Get up! We have some serious talking to do. Grandma is waiting downstairs. I made you breakfast,” Klara said, firmly.
“Ugh. I’m not hungry. And what’s there to say?” Her stomach gurgled, betraying her.
“First off, how was it?” Klara’s tone shifted from stern to mischievous.
Her aunt settled onto the edge of the bed.
River flopped the covers and her arms down to her sides, glaring up at the ceiling.
Then she exploded into a grin.
“Oh. My. Go d. It was amazing. I thought I was going to fly away. Explode?
Pass out?”
“Hmmm…I remember my first kiss.”
“Who says it’s my…yeah, alright.” Her grin faded to a scowl. Klara tilted her

head, waiting for her to continue.
“Not that it was special or anything. Not really.”
“What makes you say that?” Klara genuinely looked perplexed.
“He’s a prince. He probably kisses tons of girls.”
“So what if he does? I’ve kissed lots of guys.”
“Aunt Klara!”
“What? Just because I’m waiting for Mr. Right doesn’t mean I can’t have at little fun! And it doesn’t mean they weren’t special each in their own way. Like Terry…ooooh he could kiiiiss-”
“Oh look, I’m up and Grandma’s waiting on us!” River was already. stomping out the door of her bedroom, flinging on her robe. Klara’s cackle followed her down the stairs.
The next several minutes were all about pancakes.
And coffee. With caramel latte almond milk and sugar.
Every time Klara would start to speak River would grunt like a cavewoman, taking another syrup soaked bite and savoring it.
Finally Grandma Lucy sn atched the plate away before she could smother. the last bite with yet more syrup.
“You’re going to go into a coma if you keep drinking that much sugar, girl!” Grandma chided and swatted her playful attempts to get the plate
back.
“I have needs. No, but seriously. I’m still starving. Is that normal for your first time wolfing out?”
“They don’t call it ‘wolfing’ your food for nothing.” Klara shrugged and leaned back in her chair.
River wasn’t sure that’s where the saying actually came from.
“What is she like?” Klara asked.

“Who?”
“Your woll.”
“No clue. She’s just me. There’s no voice.”
“Hm. Must be shy. I’m sure you’ll meet her soon.” River almost missed the look that passed between her grandmother and aunt.
Note that for later.
Something was up.
“So…”
“When a female wolf and a male wolf love each other very much,” Klara began, exaggerating every syllable in singsong.
“Really now, Klare, don’t tease her. Tell her what we talked about.” Grandma Lucy was not having it this morning. She seemed tense. Agitated.
“We didn’t address this last night, because we figured you had enough on your plate. And we wanted you to enjoy it if you could. Finding your mate can be shocking, but we didn’t want to make it more stressful, given hoy happened.”
“You don’t have anything to worry about,” River said sullenly, “He’s not n mate. He was just being nice to help me save face.”
Grandma twisted her mouth up in a pensive frown before speaking. “As a member of the royal wolves, he wouldn’t lie about something like that. He couldn’t, as far as I know.”
“Wait…Klara, you said something about Fated Mates when I woke up. Actually, Kai said it too…” River tried to recall the sudden parting the night before. Kai had really looked upset..
“Fated Mates are…” Grandma began.
“Like second chances. It’s incredibly rare, Rapid. Almost no wolf ever gets another true mate,” Klara said earnestly.

“How do you know so much about it?””
“Because everyone swore Vince was my mate, as awful as we were together in the end. I started to wonder if I had been wrong. And I hoped beyond hope after that I could find another, a Fated Mate that was waiting for me.” Klara shrugged, a sad smile creasing her mouth.
“Klara, your mate is still out there. I know it.”
“Thank
yours.”
Ou, River. I think so, too. And I think this Prince Malachi could be
“I barely know him.”
“But you want to get to know him, don’t you?” Klara teased.
“It may be worth giving him a chance, River. It certainly wouldn’t hurt anything to see what he has to offer you,” Grandma added.
“Maybe. But what does being Fated Mates even mean?”
“All it means is that you have a deeper fate, dear. You and your wolf are meant for something great to have been given another option, a second. chance,” Grandma consoled her, patting her hand gently.
“So I just have to accept it?” River asked, feeling a bit pressured and uncomfortable.
“No, dear. You do not have to do anything you do not want to. Just say the word and Klara will send him on his way.”
“Um. What do you mean ‘send him on his way”?”
“Oh. Well. He’s been outside since he came by to ask for our blessing
earlier, waiting to talk to you.” Klara was opening the door.
“What?!”
Why was she opening the door?
River panicked, looking down at her rumpled sleeping shirt, shorts and pink fuzzy robe.

And neon superhero slippers.
Nothing. Ever. Goes. Right.
Kai stood in the doorway, a picture of perfect waving looks, a shoulder accenting linen button up and dark pants that snugged his legs and waist in just the right ways.
His smile widened as he looked her up and down.
Amber eyes hovered on the slippers, then up to her head.
Oh. No. Her hair looked like a wildebeest got into a fight with a bottle of super glue first thing in the morning.
“River Alexis Landon, would you do me the honor of accompanying me back to my home, to meet with my family, learn our ways, and give me the chance to show you who I am?” Even though it was a bit r eh ea rsed, he clearly meant every word deeply.
River shot a glance at her aunt and grandmother then back at the handsome male all but proposing to her in the doorway.
River slammed the door in his face.
Why was she like this?!
Klara choked on her coffee, laughter erupting from her mouth.
After a very hasty trip upstairs to wrestle her hair into a pony tail and a change of clothes, River bustled back downstairs to find Kai seated on their couch, his hands folded across his lap.
It may have been longer than she meant.
Because of the eyeliner.
And trying on six outfits.
And the lipstick.
Just a little.

“Now that I am presentable, you may present your case, my Prince.” River flopped down on the chair across from him.
Klara leaned against the doorway in the kitchen, Grandma Lucy in her own chair next to River pretending to read a book. She was always pretending to read and taking naps instead.
“All I am asking, is for you to join me back home. See how things work. Give us a chance to get to know one another.” His voice was even, but something in his eyes held a hint of longing.
“And if I decide I want to come home after a while?”
“Absolutely. You can come back and see your family whenever you want!” He insisted.
“Klara, Grandma? You’ve both been awfully quiet. What’s your take?”
“He asked us nicely if we would give our consent, but it’s up to you, Rapid. I think it might be a good idea. You’ve never been out of state. See the world a little!”
“But what about school?”
“We have the best tutors at the castle,” Kai offered.
“And what about Grandma?’
“As if I’m not sitting right here and perfectly capable of taking care of myself,” Grandma snapped.
“It just feels like I’m running away after everything that happened yesterday.”
“Well, about that, Rapid…it could be a good idea to get out of town for a little while until things settle down here, too. There are a few of Baldwin’s supporters still on the council who might need time to cool down after losing their meal ticket.”
Ah. Danger from Baldwin’s lackeys.
Not to mention the predominant mindset that River was bad luck that

most of the town had held until just last night. Considering what had happened, she might still be viewed as a token of bad mojo.
“So I’m allegedly mated to a Lycan prince and they think I’m vying for next in line to take over the pack?”
“Clay spurning you at the beginning of summer and what I did to him at the ascension doesn’t exactly leave you looking any more innocent, River,” Kai added apologetically. “Even leaving Beta Garreth in charge, I worry about upheaval in the next few weeks.”
“I would feel much better knowing you are safe and sound,” Grandma said.
“Same here, Rapid. And behind towering castle walls no less!” Klara chimed in with a supportive smile.
“Well, I guess I am going with you, then.” River bobbed her shoulders and swallowed hard.
Kai’s beaming smile made her breath catch.
OK. This won’t be all bad.
The prince rose and crossed to her, and she met him, walked him to the door.
“We leave in two days. Pack anything you like, but do much. We have plenty to wear at the castle.” He swoop shy of a kiss and waited.
River sucked in a tiny breath before grazing a brush of her
Not bad at all.

The rest of the day blurred and zipped by, while still managing to a snail’s pace with the anticipation of a departure in just two days.
Needless to say, River had trouble getting to sleep.

When she did, she immediately found her dreams foggy and troubling.
A field stretched out before her, leading off to the edge of a dark and

forbidding forest: Distantly she thought she could see the outline of a tower above the forest, rimmed in moonlight.
As the silver beams split the cloud cover, melting away the fear-soaked fog of her worries she spotted him, running along through the ancient trees.
Malachi’s wolf was the same color as his hair, but brighter, almost aflame in the gleam of the gurgling streams of moonlight.
River longed to run with him.
She felt the pull of his howl.
The promise in his powerful movements.
She needed him. Needed to be near him.
River gasped awake in her bed, two fingers to her lips, the sensation there scalded and hot.
Soft panting shook her and she let her other hand continue its path down. between her legs.
Her underwear were soaked, slick with desire.
The scaring memory of Kai’s lips on hers fed a longing and the fantasy of those lips trailing down, her jaw, her collarbone.
His hot breath from the lake played along her ear and throat.
Her fingers were his as she dragged one achingly slowly up along one crease, shudders cascading through her legs, and down the other side, eliciting another shiver of brain melting tingles.
Those kisses reached her nipples, toying and nipping at each in turn.
Then his lips traced the line of her stomach.
Her belly button,
Somewhere along the way the image of Kai had removed her-shirt, tossed the covers back and dragged her panties down to her mid thighs.

Then his lips found her center
Her passion-drenched fingers rolled a circle around her peak. His tongue.
They split apart to graze down around the delicate rim on either side. His mouth, kissing her deeply, exploring every inch of her sex
When he finally did those two fingers into her, the effect was volcanic
River shook and found her teeth clenched around her knuckles, barely holding in a cry
Inside her, roiling waves of ecstasy screamed from the arching surge that began in her feet and rolled up between her thighs, curling and crashing up into her belly, and vibrating up into her neck, fading to a shiver that tingled in her scalp.
Every cell inside her screamed one name: Kai.
